A good grounding in Maths is vital if you wish to enter university or embark on a career.  A grade B or better in IGCSE or GCSE Maths provides evidence that you have the numeracy skills to succeed.

In fact many universities prefer IGCSE to GCCSE, which is why over 550 independent schools in the UK now offer it.

Unlike GCSE, IGCSE has no coursework requirements.  Assessment is by final exam, and this makes it the best option for home students everywhere.

The Wolsey Hall home study Maths course is full of explanations, helpful tips, excercises and assignments to help you achieve a good grade in your exam.  It will guide you carefully through  the syllabus.

Maths is one of the English Baccalaureate subjects.

Key Aims

The course will enable you to:

  • develop your knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts and techniques
  • acquire a foundation of mathematical skills for further study in the subject or in related areas
  • enjoy using and applying mathematical techniques and concepts, and become confident in using mathematics to solve problems
  • appreciate the importance of mathematics in your study, in society and in employment.

Syllabus and Assessment

The course is designed to meet the requirements of Cambridge IGCSE Maths syllabus 0580 (papers 2 and 4).

Assessment comprises two written papers, the first of 1 1/2 and the second of 2 1/2 hours.  There is no coursework.

Unless you advise us that you wish otherwise, you will be prepared for the Extended curriculum, which will give you the best chance of gaining grades A* - C.  We also offer the course at Core level for those who feel more comfortable with that.  The highest grade achievable at Core level is grade C.

The exam is offered in both May/June and November of each year worldwide.  There are many Cambridge exam centres in the UK.  If you are based outside the UK, you will normally be able to sit for your exams at your nearest British Council office.

The Home Study Course

The course book is endorsed by Cambridge. You'll find it good to work with.  This, together with the materials in your online learning file, will contain everything you need to commence your studies right away.  Since the courseis designed specifically to cover the above syllabus, you can be confident that you will learn everything you need in order to obtain a good pass in your exam.

Your Tutor and your Assignments

Your tutor is your online personal learning coach whom you can email at any time, and  to whom you can also talk via Skype.  He or she will give you detailed feedback on your learning assignments, and plenty of advice and encouragement throughout your course.

You will have assignments with exam type questions to complete at regular intervals during the course. These are a key part of your learning process. They will prepare you thoroughly for your exam and will enable you and your tutor to gauge your progress throughout. Completing the course assignments will greatly increase your chances of a good exam grade.

When you’ve finished each assignment, you email it to your tutor for assessment via your online file. Your tutor will provide you with rapid and detailed feedback, so you'll see your skills and knowledge developing month by month.
