This home study course will be of interest to those who, in addition to Pure Maths, wish to become adept in the use of statistical techniques such as probability, data collection, sampling, and hypothesis testing.
Key Aims
The course aims to:
- develop your ability to reason logically and recognise incorrect reasoning, to generalise and to construct mathematical proofs;
- extend your range of mathematical skills and techniques and use them in more difficult, unstructured problems;
- develop your understanding of coherence and progression in mathematics and of how different areas of mathematics can be connected;
- recognise how a situation may be represented mathematically and understand the relationship between ‘real-world’ problems and standard and other mathematical models and how these can be refined and improved
- use mathematics as an effective means of communication;
- read and comprehend mathematical arguments and articles concerning applications of mathematics;
- acquire the skills needed to use technology such as calculators and computers effectively, recognise when such use may be inappropriate and be aware of limitations;
- develop your awareness of the relevance of mathematics to other fields of study, to the world of work and to society in general;
- take increasing responsibility for your own learning and the evaluation of your own mathematical development.
The Syllabus
This course prepares you for the Edexcel Mathematics AS level syllabus 8371, and A2 syllabus 9371. The full Advanced Level qualification comprises both AS and A2 level. We have chosen this syllabus as it is the most suited to those studying from home.
AS level
- C1: Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry; sequences and series; differentiation; integration
- C2: Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane; sequences and series; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; integration.
- S1: Mathematical models in probability and statistics; representation and summary of data; probability; correlation and regression; discrete random variables; discrete distributions; the Normal distribution
A2 level
- C3: Algebra and functions; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; numerical methods.
- C4: Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane; sequences and series; differentiation; integration; vectors.
- S2: The Binomial and Poisson distributions: continuous random variables; continuous distributions; samples; hypothesis tests
Assessment
Assessment is by three written papers for the AS level and three written papers for the A2 level.
The Home Study Course
Your study texts and your online learning file will contain everything you need to start studying right away. The course is designed specifically to cover the above syllabus. So you can be confident that you will learn everything you need to achieve a high grade in the examination.
Your Tutor and your Assignments
Your tutor is your online personal learning coach whom you can email at any time, and to whom you can also talk via Skype. He or she will give you detailed feedback on your learning assignments, and plenty of advice and encouragement throughout your course.
You will have assignments with exam type questions to complete at regular intervals during the course. These are a key part of your learning process. They will prepare you thoroughly for your exam and will enable you and your tutor to gauge your progress throughout. Completing the course assignments will greatly increase your chances of a good exam grade.
When you’ve finished each assignment, you email it to your tutor for assessment via your online file. Your tutor will provide you with rapid and detailed feedback, so you'll see your skills and knowledge developing month by month.
